It is with great sadness that the family of Joan Shields Tracey announces her passing on February 19th, 2024, at the age of 87. Joan died peacefully in her home, and she will live on in the hearts and minds of her four adoring children: Bill and his fiancée Lauren of Jamestown, RI, Ann Hunnewell and her husband Robert of Dedham, MA, Leo and his wife Frederika of Wakefield, RI, and Michael of La Quinta, CA. She will also be remembered with deep affection by her five grandchildren: Alex, Caroline, James, Anika, and Jackson.

She is preceded in eternal life by her one true love, William J. Tracey.

A native of Providence, and the second daughter of Anna and Frank Shields, she attended Salve Regina College and became an elementary school teacher before motherhood called upon her, and she dedicated her life to creating a loving home and family. Joan was also an avid and skilled golfer who was a member of Metacomet, Kittansett, and Mid Ocean Country Clubs.

Joan was a devout Catholic and benefactor of the Catholic Church. She became a Dame of Malta in 1998, participating in the Order's projects with enthusiasm and dedication. She was also a Eucharistic Minister at her beloved St. Sebastian's Parish.

Joan spent many hours visiting elderly and hospice patients in need of care or just simple companionship. She was active in local and national democratic politics always with an eye toward giving everyone a fair and equitable opportunity. "An absolute one of a kind, whose beauty and charm was second to none" is a comment by a family friend we felt apropos. She was as engaging and personable as one could hope to be, and to know her was a joy and a privilege.

Above all else, she was a passionate matriarch whose vigor and force of personality shaped the very essence of her children and grandchildren. Her heart and her spirit will always be the fabric of who we are as a family.

A mass of Christian burial will be held in the Church of St. Sebastian (67 Cole Avenue, Providence, RI) on Monday, February 26th at 11:00 AM.

In lieu of flowers donations in Joan Shields Tracey’s name can be made to: Button Hole Golf at:

Burial will be private.
